WHAT IS THIS THING RAP?
STREET POETRY IN RHYTHM,
CONCEPT AND DRIVEN.
Rap is old … its origins goes back to the 1920’s and beyond. It came into vogue in my mind with the 1980’s & 90’s; I have to admit that I was not ‘a fan’ of Rap music at the time. In the 1980’s and 90’s I was really into classical and folk music - I saw rap music as the abuse of the English language and something that was associated with drugs and crime. However, as a expression of concepts and ideas, and where music meets poetry - its fascinating. Anything that can get people interested in education and learning is to applauded and embraced as part of a larger effort in advancing individuals and humanity. The inspirational educator Christopher Emdin who uses Rap to link education with imagination and liberation (rather than the stagnant concept of learning as memorization - no growth there) is something I have come to appreciate - even as an ‘old fart’ in my late 50’s.
Thank you Professor Emdin.
